Selecting a pet

The cutest photo is not always the best clue. Choosing well means finding an animal whose energy, size and needs match your real life, not your ideal one.
Think about your lifestyle
- Energy: if you enjoy long walks or running, an active dog can join you. If you spend more time at home, a calm adult dog or a cat may suit you better.
- Space: size matters less than energy, but consider stairs, a yard and places to walk nearby.
- Time alone: some animals handle being alone better than others. Ask how the pet behaves when nobody is around.
Young or adult
Puppies and kittens need training, patience and constant supervision. Adults usually have a settled personality, which makes it easier to know what living together will be like. Senior animals can also be wonderful companions.
Ask the shelter
- How does the pet get along with children, dogs and cats?
- Does it have any health condition or ongoing treatment?
- How sociable or shy is it with new people?
- Is it spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped?
The people who care for the animal every day know it best. Tell them about your home and let them make suggestions. On each pet's page in My Pet App you can call or message the shelter directly.
